About Eldritch

Eldritch draws inspiration from a specimen book published by the Franklin Type Foundry in Cincinnati in 1889. The original source comprised only 15 letterforms, distinguished by remarkable serifs and unique features. Eldritch emerged by enhancing the consistency of form and meticulously preserving the essence of the historical inspiration.

Project Opportunity

In the creative process of developing the Eldritch typeface, its inherently gothic and elongated characteristics naturally lent themselves to a captivating aesthetic. The primary objective was to immerse the typeface in an evocative "Eldritch" atmosphere, embodying the essence of the unknown and an otherworldly mysteriousness. Beyond being a typeface, Eldritch becomes a visual narrative, invoking a profound sense of wonder and curiosity, transcending the ordinary, and inviting observers into a realm of mysterious allure and unexplored dimensions.

Original:

Eldritch is derived from a specimen recovered from the Franklin Type Foundry book of 1889. It was conceived alongside a collection of distinctive marks and unique elements.

Production:

Shortly after the reimagined typeface production commenced, it became evident that Eldritch exuded a natural drama with a touch of Gothic flair. The typeface boasted sharp serifs and curved angles in harmony. Every letter underwent multiple revisions, preserving the original work's essence.

Theme:

The objective was to maintain Eldritch's enigmatic aura, and in crafting diverse visuals and touchpoints, it was crucial to employ language that could evoke a profound sense of eeriness and the unknown.

Exhibition:

I was actively involved in Transcend: Across, Beyond, and Through, an exhibition curated by designers in the AUTF Digital Resurrections in Typography program. As a designer on the branding and promotions team, my responsibilities included coordinating an advertising campaign through social media, posters, and digital signage to promote the event, as well as crafting various take-home merchandise like posters, stickers, bookmarks, notebooks, keychains, and tote bags to enhance the experience for attendees.
